Second Generation

2. John Huckin 1 (Francis ) was christened 20 Mar 1676/1677 in Kingham, Oxfordshire, England. He was buried 8 Oct 1746 in Kingham, Oxfordshire, England. John was employed as Farmer.

John Huckin married Hannah Hale at Kingham on 19th July 1724; Hannah Hale was then twenty-five years old. Had this been the John Huckin, son of Nathaniel, born in 1691, there would have been little age difference between them; it was certainly too soon to be the marriage of John Huckin born in 1707. However, it much more likely that this John was Eleanor's eldest brother, who was aged 47 in 1725 and was therefore almost twice as old as his bride. Five children of John and Hannah Huckin were baptized in Kingham between 1726 and 1737, of whom the eldest, Mary, was his executrix (administration was granted on 12th October 1747). John Huckin had been buried the year before on 8th October 1746, when he was aged 69. He, too, had signed the petition in 1724 for a faculty to construct a special pew for John Haddon in Kingham Church.

John married 1 Hannah Hale daughter of William Hale and Sarah 19 Jul 1724 in Kingham, Oxfordshire, England. Hannah was christened 19 Mar 1698/1699 in Kingham, Oxfordshire, England. She was buried 16 Jul 1744 in Kingham, Oxfordshire, England.

Hannah Hale, who married John Huckin on 19th July 1724, belonged to another well-established Kingham family whose origins can be traced there at least as early as the end of the fifteenth century. At one time they had been a prosperous and highly respected family - freeholders in the early seventeenth century. But for some time the family fortunes had been in decline, and it is likely that Hannah's father, William, was an agricultural labourer. William and Sarah Hale had four children baptized in Kingham: Ann and John in 1683 and 1685, and Hannah and Anthony on 19th March 1698/9 and 2nd August 1702. This leaves an uncomfortable gap of about thirteen years (between 1685 and 1698) when no children were baptized in Kingham. There is clear evidence that the four children were siblings belonging to the same generation, and, unless their father married twice, both times to a woman named Sarah, they had the same parents. Although some villagers in Kingham joined the Quakers in the 1690s, it is unlikely that this is the explanation for the gap, since the rector recorded the dates of birth of the unbaptized Quaker children in the village (withholding a 'Christian' name), and their names do not include any Hales. However, there is the strong probability that the Elizabeth Hale who married Thomas Farrand at Daylesford in 1718 was the sister of Anthony Hale, and, if her age at burial is accurate, she was born in 1696 during the apparently barren period of William and Sarah Hale's marriage. So, perhaps we should assume that the Hale family moved away from the village temporarily between 1685 and 1698, and that other children, including Elizabeth, were born elsewhere during that time.
